A copy of a series of notes taken from a course of lectures by Étienne Tourtelle at the École de Santé de Strasbourg. The notes are made by a medical student probably named Chagnet as this name appears on the title page. There are sections on age and sex, the effect of environmental conditions on health including weather, climate and light.

Biographical note

The École de Santé de Strasbourg was founded in 1794 and like the schools at Paris and Montpellier, its aim was to educate health officers for military and naval service. Dr Étienne Tourtelle served as a physician in the Army of the Rhine from 1792.
