About this work

Description

A vase-painting then in the possession of Sir William Hamilton; subsequently in the British Museum (no. 1772,0320.27.+). The subject was interpreted by Winckelmann as Hercules approaching Omphale (Jenkins and Sloan, loc. cit.); by Jenkins and Sloan as perhaps Demeter in the house of Keleos (Celeus, king of Eleusis and her priest)
