About this work

Description

Not identified by Lavater: a Franciscan who wrote on theology, identified in Volpato's key to the figures in "La disputa" as Duns Scotus, though Alexander of Hales would fit equally well: see Raphael invenit, Rome 1985, pp. 34 and 276 ("Ven. Scotus")

"Another head which strikes by its character of greatness, by a happy mixture of calmness and resolution, of intrepidity and gentleness ... a collection of such shaven heads, presented in this attitude and in this light, woud be infinitely interesting to the physiognomical observer"--Lavater, op. cit., p. 279
