Signed on the recto and extensively inscribed by the artist in fair copy in pencil on the verso. The date is inscribed by Edward Adamson on the verso
Lettering on verso: "I do not regard this as a painting as such, but rather as something of a symbolic portrayal. For example the chinmney stack would represent the daylight at the end of a dark tunnel, -- or in other words the modest star I have been unable as yet to pull out of the sky. The hill side represents that tunnel already referred to. The sealed document denotes the voice of welcome which comes from those very rare people who sincerely say "You are one of us so there is now no need to panic whenever you try to step out of the shadows."
