About this work
Description
The first in a four-part series in which historian Ruth Goodman, Professor Nick Barber and PhD student Tom Quick recreate an authentic 19th-century pharmacy. They discover the world of the pharmacy at the beginning of Queen Victoria's reign in 1837. Traditional remedies such as leeches, oil of earthworm and potions laced with cannabis and opium were the kind of things that would be found in a pharmacy. The team sample some of the old ways and venture into new discoveries, such as the Malvern water cure, the bronchial kettle for curing coughs and ht einvention of Indian tonic water.
