About this work

Description

These lithographs are derived from the dance of death frescos painted on the walls of the churchyard of the Dominican cloister in Basel. Executed between 1437 and 1441, these frescos were often altered and were finally removed in 1805 when damages could not be restored. Some of the wall fragments are preserved in the history museum in Basel

Der Tod zum Blinden. Dein Wegzeiger schneid ich dir ab, tritt sittlich, fällt mir sonst ins Grab: du armer blinder alter Stock, in deinem bösen pletzten Rock. Antwort des Blinden. Ein blinder Mann ein armer Mann, sein Mus und Brod nicht g'winnen kann: könnt' nicht ein Tritt gehn ohn' mein Hund, Gott sei g'lobt, dass hie ist die Stund. Bears number top right : No. 33.
