"This book centers on the emotions of viewing one's internal scans in the doctor's office in the moment of diagnosis. As the neurologist moves through the scanned body in search of the signs of disease, so too is the viewer of this book pulling apart images of the patient's spine in search of meaning. The transparency of the pages allows the viewer to view mirrored images of the body, interpersed with bright white spaces. These white spots are reminiscent of the bright lesions exposed in the medical scans and serve to highlight the text, which document the inner throughts of the patient. The text articulates the alienation between the lived body and the medicalized body, which has become unrecognizable. As well, the patient reflects on the feelings of detachment between herself and her neurologist when he is unable to look her in the face. Finally, a sense of temporality is evoked as the images of the body and the plate tone of the prints become darker and darker, pointing to the progression of uneasy thought on the prospect of living with a progressive chronic illness.."--From artist.
