About this work

Description

A report on the practice of capital punishment in the U.S.A., the last industrialized democracy to retain the death penalty. In 1991, there were 25,000 murders in America and in 1992 there were 21 executions. Reporter John Ware visits Louisiana, Alabama, Texas and Virginia and finds that up to one-third of U.S. death row prisoners are believed to be mentally retarded or insane, while in Louisiana and Alabama juveniles can be executed. Rising crime figures are being met with an increasingly rigorous attitude towards criminals which often takes little account of the distinction between justice and revenge.
