    The ashpits and closets in the district are emptied and attended to reg’ularly, and I consider them to be in a satis- factory condition. I trust the Council will continue to insist on Water Closets for all new property, as I consider the old-fashioned open closets very detrimental to health. I very much regret to again have to remind the Council that a Public Urinal is still a thing of the future, although urgently needed. INFECTIOUS DISEASES. It affords me great pleasure to be able to report a substantial decrease in cases of Infectious Disease. In 1904, 35 cases were reported, but for 1905 there were only 19 cases, a decrease of 16 for the year. Typhoid Fever cases were only 4 as compared with 9 the previous year. This, I consider, is mainly owing to the energy of your Surveyor in finding out and abating nuisances in drains and ashpits. The totals are as follows : — Scarlet Fever ... 11 Typhoid Fever ... 4 Diphtheria ... 2 Erysipelas ... 2 19 There was one death from notifiable infectious disease. The births for the year were 137—70 boys and 67 girls. This is a decrease of one, compared with 1904. The deaths during the year were 80, being an increase of 11 for the year. The infant mortality shows a decided improvement, being i in 5, as against i in 3 for 1904. There were three deaths from Consumption, and four from Cancer. The population is estimated at about 5,200, and is practically stationary. The total acreage is 940. Acting on the instructions of the Local Government Board I beg to make the following observations : —
