About this work

Description

One of three arches erected to mark the entry of Stadholder-King William III into the Hague in 1691, this one being in the public square (Plein?). The elements of the arch that are shown in the etching are described in inscriptions: on the base of the equestrian statue of William III, "Haga posuit, Coss. decr." (The Hague placed this, by decree of the magistrates); a land battle and a sea battle "Soloque. Saloque" (by land and by sea); "Sceptris" (with sceptres, Hercules carrying his club), "Exercitibus" (with armies, a land battle), "Classibus" (with fleets, a sea battle), and "Votis" (with oaths, warriors fighting over a banquet table: perhaps Perseus and Phineus at the wedding of Perseus and Andromeda). These and other elements of the arch are described in English in Scott, loc. cit. A side view of another one of the three arches is seen through the present arch
