Description

Photographs of envelope and contents addressed to James Stafford Esq (intended for Dr Armgaard Karl Graves), but returned to Burroughs Wellcome & Co (as the putative sender) by the Post Office.

The file contains the following photographs:
envelope front, actual size (stamped and franked, addressed to "James Stafford Esq / Glasgow / General Post Office", with "Burroughs Wellcome & Co" printed in top left corner, and stamped "To be returned to Sender");
an enlarged photograph of envelope front;
envelope back, actual size;
as a single photograph, the face of two Bank of England notes, for ten pounds and five pounds;
as a single photograph, the backs of the same five and ten pound notes:
pages 1 and 2 of three-page manuscript letter in German (1 April, 1912) from "Marta";
page 3 of three-page manuscript letter in German (1 April, 1912) from "Marta";
two identical photographs of page 1 of two-page typescript letter in German (4 April, 1912), on Burroughs Wellcome & Co headed paper, from "WLS";
page 2 (comprising four words only) of two-page typescript letter in German (4 April, 1912), verso Burroughs Wellcome & Co headed paper, from "WLS".

The file includes translations into English of both letters. The translated letter of 1 April is present in typescript, together with shorthand text and a brief manuscript commentary. The translated letter of 4 April is in manuscript. Date of translations not indicated. Translator's initials appear to be "ST".
