About this work

Description

Wrapped around the tree is a serpent with the head of Lord Melbourne. The tree also contains the portrait of William IV. Sir John Campbell (1807-1855), on failing to become Master of the Rolls, resolved to resign but gave way to a promise that in recognition of his services, his wife should be raised to the peerage
