About this work

Description

Documentary presented by Simon Welfare in which Dr. Oliver Sacks describes his work during the mid- and late 1960s at the Mount Carmel Hospital, New York with survivors of the 1920s "sleepy sickness" (Encephalitis Lethargica) epidemic. Treatment with L-Dopa achieved initial, dramatic success which brought a new train of problems for those patients whom it returned, violently, to the present-day world. The patients speak about their reactions to the drug and are seen both with and without medication.
