About this work

Description

In the album, the picture is accompanied by an explanatory text. It begins by comparing the parasitical nature, of the worm to corruption in society. Then it tells the story of a linen draper who suffers from worms; the attentions of his doctor and family are largely unsuccessful until one day the enormous helminth emerges from its host. The doctor can be seen on the right measuring the worm and resting it into a jar marked 'Esprit vin'. As in Wellcome Library no. 16251i, a number of puns and correspondances are placed around the scene: A girl reads 'Le solitaire' by the vicomte d'Arlincourt while another plays a game of solitaire. A statue stands in the background, of Laocoön and his children being strangled by serpents
