Description

Holograph diary of his expedition in which he discovered the course of the Niger: from 31st March to 30th October, 1830. This is part of the Journal of Lander's second expedition, which he made after the death of Clapperton, who was his leader in the first expedition in 1827.

Biographical note

The second expedition left Portsmouth 4 January 1830, and reached Cape Coast Castle on February 22nd. On 1st December they reached Fernando Po, and returned to England in July 1831. For this expedition, and the discovery of the true course of the Niger, Lander was the first to receive the Gold Medal of the newly formed Royal Geographical Society.
