About this work

Description

In the text, the plate is entitled "Attention without (real) interest". Lavater comments that "the English artist thought it necessary to improve upon the original of the print in point of drawing and effect, but has preserved the character in order to support the author's remarks. The under-chin he thought himself at liberty to correct, as it has little to do with the general expression". However, Lavater also criticises the unnamed English artist's rendering of the under-chin: "a clumsy caricature of a beautiful chin"
