Sylvia was educated at the London Hospital School of Medicine, qualifying in 1906. She married J.E. Payne, a surgeon, and they had three children. During the first World War, Sylvia was Commandant and Medical Officer in charge of the Torquay Red Cross Hospital, for which she was created CBE in 1918. She then became a psychiatrist at the London Clinic of Psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis was a controversial subject, and Sylvia helped establish it as a useful contribution to psychotherapy.
