About this work

Description

Black and white photograph of Maud Allan, a Canadian dancer, wearing her beaded costume as 'Salome' in the Dance of the Seven Veils. In World War I, Allan was accused of being a German lesbian spy due in part to the risque nature of her dancing and a comment about the 'cult of the clitoris'. Allan unsuccesfully sued for libel and the aftershocks of the trial led to a bill criminalising 'gross indecency between females' in 1921.
