About this work

Description

Set of handwritten notes by Charnley, including: descriptions of his artwork and artistic process, along with drafted artist statements, and general writings about art; creative writing; extensive dream journal entries, each one dated and offering a summary if his dream, alongside his own analysis of them and some general research notes about dreams; research notes on psychology (Freud, Jung, various theories) and schizophrenia; sets of 'case histories' of individuals named using mostly just their initials - the source of these is not clear, they may just be the opinion of Charnley; set of 'free associations' which are each dated and take the form of either diary entries or just quick word associations; and sets of dated entries entitled, 'Unexplained' or 'Notes on Unexplained'.

There are some sketches within the text used as illustrations or images from dreams.

There are post-it notes throughout, stuck directly onto the text, which contain quotations and phrases.

These pages were originally kept in a blue lever arch folder which had the title, 'BJC Journals Notes Research 1978-1991', on the label. Only some of the pages have actually been dated inside, and these are all from 1987-1989, so this date range may or may not be accurate. There were dividers in the folder grouping the pages. These have been left in with the papers but the reason for the groupings in not clear.
