About this work

Description

Various drafts of annotated and corrected typescript story entitled 'Blackie the Goat', based on the Rosen family's visit to Nashville, Tennessee, USA, in April 1967. The title was based on the children's book which was Hughie Rosen's favorite picture book at the time, and is about race relations in the USA and (as the story begins) 'The capacity of little children to overwhelm the sensitivities of their elders by their unexpected direct responses...' which '...probably constitutes some of the greatest joys and shocks of parenthood...' Rosen submitted the account for publication in The New Yorker in 1981. File also contains a cutting and pictures of Picasso's 'She Goat' sculpture (1950) and a cutting on race issues in the USA.

The account was later incorporated in Rosen's autobiographical memoirs 'Along the Way' (See PP/ROS/H/2).
