Description

Woodcut illustration from an edition of 1537 (16th year of Jiajing reign period of Ming dynasty). The gall bladder is one of the six fu viscera. Collected Gems of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Vol. 2 states: 'The gall bladder weighs 3 liang (Chinese oz., c. 50 gr) 3 zhu (1 zhu = 1/24 liang), and measures 3 cun (Chinese inches) in length. It is located under the smaller lobe of the liver. It contains 3 ge (1 ge = c. 1 decilitre) of refined juice' (jingzhi, i.e. bile)'.
