About this work

Description

Correspondence with patients about 'Iceland Disease' also known as 'Royal Free Disease'. The majority of letters were received in response to an item on a BBC Radio 4 programme, 'Woman's Hour', broadcast in Nov 1976. In the progamme Dr Celia Wookey announced a survey she was undertaking and asked people with experience of the condition to participate in her study by answering a questionnaire. The Patients Association supported the study and sent out questionnaires on behalf of Dr Wookey.

The letters are mainly addressed to Dr Wookey or the Patients Association. The copies of responses included are by Jean Robinson, Patients Association Chairman. The letters cover the wide range of symptoms, mis-diagnosis (e.g. flu, mild polio, depression, migraine, mild epilepsy, hysteria, hypochondria), or lack of diagnosis, response of the medical profession, possible causes of the disease. Many of the correspondents describe their case history and symptoms and ask for further information and medical advice.

Includes article in the Guardian 20 Aug 1976 by Celia Wookey.
