    Tharsis, Isabelle, Pelayo). These boats do not, however, proceed at the rate of more than nine miles an hour ; and the vibration from the screw is more unpleasant than that of paddles. A French post steamer (the Pericles) goes once a month from Marseilles to Lisbon, remaining only two or three hours at the intermediate points, and thus accomplishes the voyage be- tween Marseilles and Malaga in four days. A company is likewise just formed for communi- cating between Marseilles and the Brazils. The vessels depart twice a month, and touch only at Malaga and Cadiz. Except during the prevalence of certain winds, which are not very frequent, the sea is in general tolerably calm along the south- eastern coast of Spain ; though it is very often rough between Marseilles and Barcelona, the Gulf of Lyons being exposed to the full in- fluence of the winds (mistral) which sometimes blow down the valley of the Bhone with con- siderable force. Persons who are desirous of shortening as much as possible the journey by sea, may avoid these twenty-four hovirs' steam- ing by turning off from the Rhone at Avignon, and proceeding by railroad through Nismes to Montpelier or to Cette, whence a carriage might be obtained to Perpignan, and thence to Bar- celona, by those not disposed to avail them- selves of the diligence. The plan I adopted on arriving at Cette was to proceed by the A 3
