About this work

Description

This covers the period March 1908 to August 1911. It is of interest because it provides not only a list of patients but a day-by-day record of attendances and details of fees paid. Some patients attended every weekday (or almost so) over long periods - e.g. 200 visits, 187, 153 (Knox-Shaw junior), 157, 152, 132. The standard charge was evidently one guinea but this is frequently reduced to 14/- or less. Some entries are marked 'agreed (low) fee', 10% discount', 'half fee', 'reduced on request' 'no fee' (this includes members of the medical profession), etc., and in one entry the statement 'payment refused' occurs, without further comment. One or two of the doctors' letters in the notebooks ask for the patient's circumstances to be taken into account.
