These industries provide employment for large numbers of workers, both male and female, from the Urban District and the adjacent Braintree Rural District. VITAL STATISTICS On page 9 are set out extracts of the Vital Statistics of the District for the ten-year period 1942-51, in regard to the estimated mid-year population and the local and national birth and death rates for each year during that time. Births In the year 1951, there were 240 live births in the Urban District, and these were as follows : Male Female Total 123 117 Legitimate 117 112 IDegitimate 6 5 The birth rate was 187 per 1,000 of the estimated resi<ient population and is the lowest since 1939. The death rate was 12-9 per 1,000 of the estimated resident^ population and was higher than the death rate of England and Wales as a whole.
