After reviewing the history of the NHS, the programme examines its current restructuring and asks whether its values are declining. Does competition between NHS managers distract their attention from providing a service for patients? Would trusts compete with more benefit to patients if they were altogether freed from NHS constraints? Will the NHS eventually reduce its services to cover emergencies only?
