About this work

Description

Household medical recipe book, including allopathic as well as homeopathic remedies, and some descriptions of specific cases and consultations in which particular treatments were used. A few items deal with the doctoring of horses and dogs.

Several different hands are represented. Doctors to whom prescriptions are attributed include Dr Lawrie, Dr Hamilton, Dr Harper, and Dr Holman (none of these can be reliably identified); and there are a number of recipes ascribed to apparently non-medical individuals. Several of the more substantial reports on individual treatments are signed or subscribed 'E Jones'. Some mentions of "Chepwell's [??] Guide"

There are a number of inserted items, including a prescription dispensed for a Mrs Ffoulkes by G R Lawrence, Pharmaceutical Chemist, Rhyl, press-cuttings (including one in Welsh), a leaflet from Lady Anne Marsham of Maidstone "Recipe for Infusion of Violet Leaves for use in Cases of Cancer" along with newspaper cuttings and ms notes on the same topic, a number of handwritten receipts on slips of paper, a folded page containing the lyrics of popular songs, and an invitation from the Officers and Council of the Japan Society to Mr Herbert Tinker to attend a conversazione to meet the President, HE the Japanese Minister (this would be Count Hayashi Tadasu, who served as Minister from 1900 to 1905 and then as Ambassador for a further year when relations between the United Kingdom and Japan were upgraded), and the Baroness Hayashi, Jan 1901.

Written on pp 1-137, a few entries on unpaginated leaves at end of volume, items pasted inside covers.
