About this work

Description

This programme is from the course M246,'Elements of Statistics.' Beginning with the story of the Reverend Edward Stone of Oxford's use of willow bark to treat local peasants, the programme then traces the history and methodology of medical trials and is illustrated with rare archive film, costume drama and 3-D computer-generated graphics. Two 20th century trials that the programme looks at are a trial in Lanarkshire that attempted to show the effect of free school milk on development, and the first use of antibiotics in the treatment of tuberculosis.
