Biographical note
The author obtained his M.D. at St. Andrew's University, Aberdeen in 1861 and in 1866 was appointed physician to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He was professor of medical jurisprudence at Glasgow University from 1872 to 1898 [cf. B.M.J. 1900, ii, p. 443].
