About this work

Description

Various items of incidental correspondence.

Includes Minute of Meeting (8 June, 1943) between three Scottish manufacturers (Duncan, Flockhart & Co, T & H Smith Ltd, and J F Macfarlan & Co) and TRC.

Also, a long and expansive letter (27 August, 1941) from Henry Dale, writing in a personal capacity, to T R G Bennett, concerning collaboration with industry and the pooling of research interests. The letter concludes: "Some of those with whom you are corresponding will know that, when the MRC sent me to collect and bring back to this country the 'inside' information about insulin, I tried very earnestly to persuade the industry to deal with it on a footing of open collaboration, so that my team at the National Institute could work with them. Your predecessor was largely responsible for wrecking that effort. Do what you can to achieve such a basis for the production of Penicillin, and the development of what may come of it, that Professor Florey and his team can openly co-operate with industry, without fear of being worried by jealousy or criticism. In any case, I hope you will succeed in persuading your colleagues to make a start of collaboration somewhere."
