Acquisition note

Most of the documents were purchased from various Parisian sources, mainly the dealers Charavay and Degrange, between December 1927 and July 1936 (accs.55099, 55163, 63453, 63700, 64689, 64715, 64718, 65635, 66024, 67129, 67139, 67371-67372, 67391, 69115, 69220, 69310, 69426 and 69617). Other documents were acquired at auction in London, at Stevens's sales of 4-5 November 1930, lot 389 (acc.73104) and 24 March 1931, lot 429 (acc.68126); at Sotheby's sales of 15-17 February 1932, lot 547a (acc.76088) and 29 May 1934, lot 411 (acc.62778); and at Glendining's sale of 30-31 October 1933, lot 114 (acc.67802). Two documents of unknown provenance were transferred to the Library from the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum in about 1939 (acc.91800), and one document was acquired from Mrs Watson, of Burnley, in March 1945, being presumably once part of the Thomas Madden Stone autograph collection (acc.72200). Eighteen of the documents have no recorded accession details.
