Purchased from Mrs. Watson, Burnley, March 1945 (acc.72200), presumably once part of the Thomas Madden Stone autograph collection.
Biographical note
Anna Maria Fielding was born in 1800 in Dublin and moved with her family to London in 1815. She got married to Samuel Carter Hall in 1823 and they settled in Chelsea.
Carter Hall was a writer and journalist and Anna Maria joined him, publishing her first book, Sketches of Irish Character, in 1829. She went on to become the editor of the St James's Magazine (1861–68) and also wrote novels, children tales and plays. She assisted in foundation of brompton Hospital and other benevolent institutions.
Her last book appeared a few months before her death on 30 January 1881.
