Description

Lepromatous leprosy (LL): skin This high power view of a skin section shows large numbers of foamy macrophages. Some of the macrophages contain bluish, clumped material which represents dead Mycobacterium leprae. These clumps are called globi. There are a few lymphocytes and plasma cells present. H&E stain. Acid-fast stain shows numerous fragmented and granular mycobacteria. The bacterial index (BI) = 5.5+.
