Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen, I have the honour to submit for your consideration the annual health report for 1969, together with the vital statistics relative to the period. The population has increased by 80 and stands at 35,660. The number of births has decreased: by 57 from 655 in 1968 to 598. The number of infant deaths is 8 compared with 13 in 1968. The analysis of infant deaths is to be found in the body of the report. The maternal mortality rate was Nil. The total number of deaths from all causes is 394, and the natural increase of births over deaths is 204. During the year no persons suffered from poliomyelitis. For twenty-one years in succession there were no cases of diphtheria. 1969 was not the epidemic year for measles and 15 cases in all were notified compared with 402 the year before. In the spring of 1968 a campaign was launched to vaccinate children against measles, but this was too late to prevent an epidemic in that year, although some children must have been spared the unpleasant experience. In 1969 measles vaccine became in short supply due to withdrawal of the products of one producer, so that the campaign for the vaccination of the population of children has faltered, although this will no doubt continue when supplies are again adequate. The number of deaths from cancer of the lung is 21 in 1969 compared with 24 in 1968. Eighteen of these deaths were men, and nine of them were under sixty-five. The series of five-yearly averages in the body of the report show that this scourge has been increasing over the years. Infective hepatitis became a disease notifiable to the Council from June, 1968. During the year 1969 ten cases were notified. The report includes information on the Health Services provided in the area by the Nottinghamshire County Council, and for this information I am indebted to the County Medical Officer.
