Acquisition note

The majority of the letters were purchased from Mrs. Watson, Burnley, March 1945 (acc.72200), presumably once part of the Thomas Madden Stone autograph collection. other items were purchased from Sotheby's, London, February 1930 (acc.52480), and Stevens, London, October 1930 (acc.73227). Acquisition details for number 7 were not recorded (acc.67430).

Biographical note

Jabez Hogg (1817-1889) was an opthalmic surgeon who worked at the London Illustrated News and was a surgeon at the Royal Westminster Ophthalmic Hospital.
