"5722 Vene (Corn. de). Aet. 63. Te halver lijve, v. voren en rechts, met kapje op, in de eene hand een vrucht, de andere rustende op zijn hoed, die op tafel ligt. Bovenaan zijn wapen. Afgesneden titelpr. van een zijner werken? 8o."—Van Someren, loc. cit. The object held in his right hand may be a glass bulb-shaped bottle, as suggested by Burgess, loc. cit., rather than a fruit as suggested by Van Someren
The sitter belonged to a family that had migrated from Mechelen to Regensburg in 1565 (Seibold, loc. cit., who also discusses the different forms of his surname: Devenne, von de Venne, etc.). There were two members of the family with the name Cornelius, one who lived from 1575 to 1634, and his nephew who was born in 1607. The age "Aet. 63" recorded by Van Someren is inconsistent with the life dates of the elder Cornelius, who died aged 59. The present print is therefore assumed to show the younger Cornelius
