Biographical note
Fages who had been an unsuccessful rival to Delpech in the contest for the chair of clinical surgery at the École de Médecine at Montpellier in 1812, had himself qualified as surgeon in 1789 and later been a military surgeon. In 1814 he was a professor of surgery at Montpellier.
