About this work

Description

One of a series of cards (sent in sets of 6 in exchange for coupons from jars of Liebig's 'Fleisch-Extract' or Extractum Carnis Liebig). This one describes how medicine became formalised and increasingly scientific in the early 18th century as quacks were outlawed and bloodletting became a common therapeutic process. It shows a doctor stepping out of a sedan chair carried by 2 men in green livery. He is carrying a large syringe for enemas and a couple of glass bottles in his pocket. A woman is showing him into a house with trees in the background. Liebig cards appeared in various languages.
