Description

Cutting from a newspaper (possibly January 1847) about a Dr. Hamilton operating on a young sailor, Samuel Clark, suffering from a gangrenous frostbite of feet and ankles, amputating both legs, one at a time, anaesthetized using a 'Robinson's inhaler'. The anaesthetic and surgical procedures are described in some detail as is the patient's reaction.
