Biographical note

The physician George Bate was born in Maid's Moreton, where other branches of the family resided. This volume bears a baptismal note for Esther, daughter of George Bate, minister at Moreton [f. 2v.]. The author would appear to have been a relative of Dr. Bate, therefore, with some personal knowledge of him; one receipt is headed 'Dr. B., for me, May 65' [f. 37r.].
