About this work

Description

'The sutra about the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines', Folio 208 recto, centre: Sanskrit Manuscript on Buddhism on palm-leaves with miniatures. This image depicts Buddha in dhyana (an aspect of meditation) being poked in the ears. It is taken from the 'Astasahasrikaprajnaparamitasutra', or 'The sutra about the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines'. Buddhists in general assume that sutras are the word of the Buddha, more or less abbreviated according to the level of understanding of the people. The Astasahasrikaprajnaparamitasutra was composed around the 200 AD. This manuscript is written in Sanskrit bhujmoli script on palm leaves and contains eighteen miniatures finished in a simple style, using mainly yellow and green colours, with black and white details.
