Letter from Frederick Treves to Miss Luckes, matron of the London Hospital

Autographed letter signed 'Frederick Treves' to 'Dear Miss Luckes' [matron of the London Hospital] telling her of a vacancy for a probationary nurse, and discussing at length the King's and Queen's satisfaction with the two nurses caring for the King. (The coronation of Edward VII had been expected to take place on 26 June 1902. However, an acute attack of appendicitis forced him to delay the ceremony. Sir Frederick Treves, famed as an eminent surgeon and expert in appendicitis, performed the operation and by 9 August the King had recovered sufficiently for the coronation ceremony to take place). Of the nurses Treves states: 'The King has especially expressed to me his great satisfaction...He admires their ability, gentleness, discretion and tact. He says that they are able to take a hint which few nurses are able to do.'
