Heather MacLean addresses the complex determinants of women's health. She offers insights into the new and necessary integration of social and biological determinants of health and she traces the biological roots of women's health movement in the 20th Century. She suggests that women's health was ahead of the New Public Health in recognizing the importance of population perspectives. She stresses the idea that gender as a consideration in women's health is a new concept and presents numerous examples where women have been ignored by medical science. She also reminds us that current health reforms are too often being conducted on the backs of women care-givers. Finally, she offers insights into new ways and means for practice in women's health.
