    PART II. During the year 1857 the whole number of patients under medical treatment was the same as in the year preceding, but the number of males slightly exceeded the females, while in 1856 there was a greater number of females. The sick were more numerous in the first six months of the year, than in the last;—in the 1st three months there were 26 males and 22 females; in the 2nd three months 24 males and 24 females ; in the 3rd 28 males and 20 females, and in the last three months 22 males and 16 females. The average number under medical treatment 25 males and 21 females. Pulmonary diseases prevailed in the first three months, 6 males and 3 females were under treatment for inflamma¬ tion of the lungs and pleura, 2 males and 4 females for bronchitis, 4 males and 2 females for pulmonary phthisis, and 5 females for influenza; 1 male had jaundice, 2 females diarrhoea, 1 male and 1 female peritonitis; 5 males and 3 females had abscesses and ulcers, and 1 female gangrene, 2 females scrofulous enlargement of the cervical glands and 1 accompanied with ulceration, 1 male cancer, 2 females, (erup¬ tions) lepra and eczema, 3 males and 2 females erysipelas, 1 male cynanche parotidea; 3 males and 2 females rheumatism, 2 males and 1 female ischuria, 1 amenorrhoea, and 1 female fracture of the fore arm ; 5 males and 4 females were under treatment for epilepsy, and 5 males and 1 female for general paralysis.
