Description

Diffuse lepromatous leprosy (LL): Lucio phenomenon This is a high power view of a skin biopsy section from a case of Lucio (diffuse lepromatous) leprosy in reaction. There are acid-fast bacilli (AFB) within the vessel wall (in endothelial cells) and also in the surrounding macrophages. Wade-Fite stain. The specific lesion of Lucio leprosy is the intravascular accumulation of AFB, which causes ischaemic damage to the skin.
