About this work

Description

A legendary tale. A poem, copied out by the Author's nephew, the Rev. William Davies [1769-1849]. This poem is also found in the first volume of the Collection of poems, transcribed by Davies, and dated 1794 [MS. No. 3016]. It is there entitled 'The Highway man: a tale'. This MS. seems to contain an earlier version of the poem, as it consists of only 59 four-line stanzas as against 71 in the Collection.
