About this work

Description

Head and shoulders to left wearing armour and Spanish-style ruff in fictive surround with device and motto below. After the unexpected death of Stefan Batory, King of Poland, in 1586, the pro-Hapsburg Zborowski faction forced through the election of Archduke Maximilian as king. However, he ruled Poland only briefly: the staunch anti-Austrian Jan Zamoyski confronted Maximilian and held Krakow for the Swedish crown prince, grandson of Gustavus I and son of John III of Sweden, Zygmunt III Vasa (1566-1632), who held the Polish crown 1587-1632
