About this work

Description

A salutary tale involving a once-only slip from virtue with gonorrhea as the heroine's punishment. Social isolation follows, but Betty finds a friend who helps her to follow her course of treatment. Medical expertise followed by male chivalry restore her to health and happy domestic prospects. The medical personnel encountered by Betty are severe but merciful and deliver some vague but emphatic lectures on prudent sexual conduct and the necessity of seeking treatment after transgression. The disease is only obliquely named and the nature of the treatment is not even hinted at. The film attempts to bring home its message by emphasising the social embarrassment of venereal disease. It is especially aimed at young women - the villain who infected Betty is regarded as a lost cause.
