Casualty 1907. Part 1.

This three-part series follows on from 'Casualty 1906' which looked at three days in the life of the London Hospital shortly after the turn of the last century. The London Hospital, based in the East End of London, was the most advanced hospital of its time and dealt with devastating poverty and illness before the advent of antibiotics and the NHS. All the events, characters and cases in the programme are based on hospital records, newspapers and personal memoirs. This first part looks at violent racism against Jews by the Blind Beggar Gang (active until 1920), the giving of a turpentine enema, ultraviolet light used to treat tuberculosis of the face, the deliberate starving of children for insurance purposes, the treatment and training of new nurses ('probationers'), relationships between staff and general hospital politics, a disaster in a lift shaft leading to amputation of the lower legs and a visit to the hospital from Queen Alexandra (a patron of the hospital until 1925).
