Three-part documentary series on the history of the National Health Service, made for the 40th anniversary of its inception in 1948:- "Part 1: Can You Afford the Doctor? Life Before the N.H.S". [Programme Advisor: Dr. Charles Webster (All Souls' College, Oxford; former Director, Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine, University of Oxford and Official Historian of the National Health Service] Absorbing social-historical survey of health conditions and health care provision in England and Wales between the Wars, as seen primarily, though by no means exclusively, from the stand-point of working-class households and ordinary general practitioners. Based primarily on a wealth of vivid, and often extremely moving, oral testimony by elderly former East End of London residents, but also includes two memorable cameo appearances by the aged Jessica Mitford. Also includes photographic materials supplied by the W.I.H.M.
